Is Mehdi Taremi Heading to Premier League?

Mehdi Taremi

Mehdi Taremi is having another exceptional season in front of goal for Porto. The current Portuguese champions have work to do to retain their Primeira Liga crown, but Taremi’s goals are keeping them in the hunt. After another great campaign, is the Iran international set to move on?

Porto Battling for Title

As is so often the case in Portugal’s top tier, the fight for the Primeira Liga title is fascinating. Porto, the reigning champions, are in the mix, but Sergio Conceicao’s troops have work to do in the title race. Looking at the latest football odds, Porto are priced at 9/2 to overhaul favourites Benfica. The leaders are odds-on at just 1/6, while Braga are available at 33/1.

Porto stormed their way to the Primeira Liga title last term, winning a staggering 29 of 34 games. They racked up 91 points, scoring 86 goals to boot. However, they have played second fiddle to in-form Benfica so far this year. The Dragons will not give up until winning the league is mathematically impossible, and the last few weeks of the season will no doubt be special.

Taremi Playing His Part

Porto may be the underdogs in the title battle, but Taremi is playing his part for the team. The Iranian superstar has been superb up until now. Taremi is in the mix for the Primeira Golden Boot alongside former West Ham United man Joao Mario, who has been in stunning form for Benfica this season.

Taremi made a good start to his 2022-23 campaign, scoring six league and cup goals for club and country in his opening ten appearances. He was on fire in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, scoring braces in wins over Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge and netting in the memorable 2-1 home success over Atletico Madrid.

Taremi then scored both goals in the 6-2 loss to England in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also played a big part in Iran’s impressive 2-0 success over Wales in the second group game.

Porto’s No. 9 scored a treble in an easy 5-1 league win over Arouca after returning from the World Cup, and he hit the winner against rivals Benfica in early April.

Will the Iranian Move to Premier League?

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are having a great season in the Premier League, as the Gunners hunt down a first league title since 2004. Their star striker Gabriel Jesus suffered an injury while playing for Brazil at the World Cup, and Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Taremi to fill the gap. Although the move did not materialise, we could see Taremi in England very soon.

The striker has reportedly caught the eye of many big clubs in Europe after a couple of standout seasons with Porto at the Estadio do Dragao. Many top players want to play in the Premier League, and this could be Taremi’s last chance as he turns 31 in the next season.

Right now, the Iran forward will be focusing on the Primeira Liga with Porto. As we enter the business end of the season, Taremi will be hoping to fire the goals to help Porto to more domestic glory.
