The Race for the Iranian Title Gets Hot

The Iranian Pro Football League is one of the most thrilling sports to watch due to its competitiveness which attracts huge crowds. This league brings together various teams that compete at the highest division in the country for the title. Following the reorganization of the league in 2013, 16 teams have been taking part in the competition. The best team that accumulates the highest points wins the league title. The league champions also get a direct ticket to play in the AFC Champions League at the Group Stage level. Any team from the Iranian Pro Football League that wins the Hazfi Cup also joins the League winners and the runners up in playing at the group stages of the AFC Champions League.

The 2020/2021 Iranian Pro Football League Season

The Iranian Pro Football League runs a regular season that requires the participating teams to play home and away matches. The league runs regularly starting in July and ends in May. The matches attract many football fans that fill the stadiums to watch their favorite teams compete for the title. However, as the world continues to fight the COVID 19 pandemic social distancing has become a norm making it difficult for the football fans to gather in stadiums. The 2020/2021 season is up and running. The competition for this season’s title is getting hot as depicted through the Iranian Pro League standings and scores.

The Top 5 Teams

The 2019/2020 league title was won by Persepolis. The top five teams in contention for the 2020/2021 Iranian Football Title include; Sepahan, Persepolis, Esteghlal, Gor Gohal and Aluminium Arak. Sepahan Football Club leads the pack at the top of the Iranian Table with 44 points having played 21 matches. Sepahan is three points clear of the second placed Persepolis which has 41 points with a game in hand.Esteghlal, Gor Gohal and Aluminium Arak have 34, 29 and 29 points respectively. Esteghlal and Gor Gohal Football clubs have two games in hand to play. Football pundits have predicted that the Iranian Title is a two horse race between Sepahan and Persepolis. These two clubs have been in great form in the most recent games with Sepahan remaining undefeated in its last eight football matches. Persepolis on the other hand has already recorded a 10 games undefeated run.

The Iranian Football League title has been won by various teams throughout its history. Some of the teams that have dominated include Persepolis, Sepahan, Esteghlal and Foolad. Persepolis prides itself on having the most league titles in the division with six followed closely by Sepahan which has five. Esteghlal and Foolad have 3 and 2 titles respectively. Persepolis has been the most consistent team in winning the league title having won it a record four consecutive seasons from 2016-2017 to 2019-2020 season.

With the number of games remaining to finalize the 2020/2021 season reducing, all eyes are on the top five teams. We expect a hotly contested title this season as we approach the end. At the end of the season, the last two teams with the least points in the Iranian Pro Football League will be relegated to play in Azadegan League.
